StStory of Bali, Indonesia

In trance, the individual is possessed by a spirit, so his behaviour is not within his control and he cannot be blamed for behaving the way he does; in possession, the individual is believed to be receiving or expressing feelings and information from a god or a spirit Trance in dance and ceremonies allows for the expression of many kinds of emotions without threatening to disrupt the bonds and harmony of the community and it sometimes clears up dissatisfaction

A visitor to Bali can observe trance in several situations, e.g., he can seek out the traditional healers who use it. Trance is less commonly seen in ceremonies, although at the time of the Kuningan ceremonies at the village of Kesiman in Denpasar about 100 participants will go into trance. The trance of the fire dance is performed almost daily at Bona approximately 20 kilometres from Denpasar and at Butabulan 8 kilometres from Denpasar.

'Me show at Bona begins with the kecak dance in which most of the 80 men of the chorus are in trance, then it continues with 'the haie girl trance dance (Sang Hyang Dedari) and ends with. a fire dance (Sang Hyang Jaran) in which a man dances with a symbolic hobby horse for about 10 minutes on fiery - hot coals from burning coconut husks, leaving little doubt that he is in a real trance. Before the jaran dancer begins, a chorus entices him, chanting in Balinese, to the effect, 'Go on, go to the fire. It's good; it's not hot. Go'.33 His impassive facial expressions of staring and blankness during trance and while coming out of trance are typical. He suffers no burns because of the physiological changes in pain and tissue responses that occur in the trance state (Chapman, Goodell, and Wolff, 1959). The authors ascertained by interviews with the dancers about their experiences before entering, during, and after their performance that all of them were in trance.
