What Indonesia - Bali is all about ?

This last is far the most delightful. To see the wall of intent dark faces growing bright with day is at least as thrilling as the splendid end of a good Ardja, and after all it is quite an important part of it.
The themes of Ardja are treated with an abundance of circumstance and sentiment which we find nowhere else on the Balinese stage, so that one is tempted to describe several performances at length. But how can one hope to reproduce in words the living sensations which make the performance even in memory so moving? Perhaps it is necessary to have been awakened at 2 a.m. by the moon shining in one's face through the open door, to have climbed the bright, empty road to the great square in front of the palace, to have heard from far of the flute and drum and wailing cadences of Ardja, or the peals of hysterical laughter at some well-found improvisation of the clown

Room will be made for one among the crowd of women and children who have been sitting for at least two hours already and will sit off and on for seven hours more while the strange adventures of the legendary Prince Koripan are unfolded, who, under the influence of a love potion, forgot his newly married, lovely wife, the princess of Daha, and fell madly in love with the ugly and supremely ridiculous Likoe.
The Likoe was played by a large, ugly man with the physique of a boxer. Her ear-plugs were tied under her chin with a thick strap; her manly cheeks, daubed with white paint, her athletic bare shoulders, and her fantastically waving palm-leaf head-dress made her sentimental raptures supremely farcical.
