Story of Bali, Indonesia

A cremation ceremony or Village ceremony can -take precedence over main thoroughfare traffic, causing an entire main highway through Denpasar to be closed off for half a day. One horse buggy taxis (dokar) still abound in Denpasar and other large cities. These are more expensive than the public or private minibuses, but they have the advantage of taking you to the door. They are privately owned and can carry up to 4-5 adults or crowd in about 8 children.

Ninety-three and three-tenths per cent of the Balinese are Hindu. About 5 per cent are Muslim and the remainders are Buddhist, Protestant, and Catholic. Occupations include farmers (animal husbandry, forestry, and fishery), 50.74 per cent; government officers and public services, 15.33 per cent; tradesmen, hotel staff, and restaurant employees, 14.52 per cent; industrial workers, 9.84 per cent, and builders, 4.82 per cent.

Per capita income is relatively low in Bali, currently averaging the equivalent of less than US$300.00 per year. However, poverty is not evident in the way that it is in developing countries such as India, Mexico, and. Brazil

There are very few beggars or homeless even in the capital city of Denpasar and fewer in the countryside. There are no shanty towns. Even the poorest can afford or manage to obtain clothes, shelter, and food. In some villages, Western type medical care is marginal. However, public health clinics exist even A the remote areas. Looking at life's style and earnings from a, Balinese perspective, the authors disagree with Wikan that the Balinese may be among the world's poorest people.

Bali has no seasons in terms of temperature or growing, only a rainy season from December through March and a dry season. During the rainy season it seems much hotter because of higher humidity. In the mountain areas it rains more than on the plains the shores. Water is no problem (except in the desolate part of the island); it flows through the rice paddies, and in the streams, rivers and ditches that run alongside the roads in which the people bath themselves and their cows daily.
