Story of Bali, Indonesia

It is a house, the first Batak traditional rumah holon (big house) I have seen. it looks as wide as it is long and high. What is so striking 1% its angular shape The peaked gable projects forward. from A great roof .of black thatch greened with moss. Beneath this, the wooden sidewalls slope down. -1-hc entrance is by ladder-like steps. Rismono says six families live in the house. It looks big enough to hold them.

THE MAENGKET DANCE. This popular dance is from North Sulawesi and is danced by young men and women. The purpose of the dance, which is actually an entertainment, is to thank God for a good harvest. It is danced in pairs and for many the opportunity of holding hands is the first meeting leading to a marriage. Because of this dance, the young men and women get to know one another better.

SULAWESI DANCES IN THE PERIOD OF MODERN SOCIETY

In the period of Modern Society there have appeared Sulawesi dances created by young choreographers which can be enjoyed as good entertainment.

Initial encounters with music as foreign to Western ears as Balinese gamelan are understandably bewildering to most.-Even for sensitive and sympathetic listeners it is difficult to make much sense of the music until after repeated exposure to the new sounds, instruments and tunings. The problem is compounded by the fact that the music is orchestral and so much is happening at once. Some sort of step by step guide that applies the abstract concepts presented in the previous chapter to a particular piece of music therefore seems worth pursuing.

It is in the nature of man to be a rational-cultural being, a social being and a political being. It is these three unique characteristics which distinguish man from other creature,

Man as a rational-cultural being, endowed with reason and Culture, will always create things with his labour, be it concrete or abstract, which serve as requirements for preserving his life as a human being. In his efforts to preserve his life, he will not be successful singlehandedly, but will, in accordance with his second characteristics as a social being, look for a companion or companions to help him with the work he cannot do on his own. His third characteristic as a political being makes him conscious of the 'fact that to preserve his life in the modern world he needs a state.
