Story of Bali, Indonesia

Communities vary in the amount of opportunities available for social interaction. The cities and Bayung Gede are two extremes. In the cities there are numerous opportunities. In Bayung.Gede diere are much fewer, particularly for women because the husband is often out of the home working in the fields and the wife is either working (e.g., carrying water or in the fields) or home alone usually with her small children, and she is busy. At the banjar men meet socially and a great deal of open discussion among equal takes place there. Because women are home and/or-alone much 'of' the day does not mean that, they are schizoid. All of the persons inter- viewed at Bayung Gede were normal in they expression of emotion and in rapport, with the exception of the one elderly woman living in the banished area on the edge of the village, who appeared to ble demented. Emotional expressiveness is discussed in.

Clubs (seka) are a prominent part of daily life, a rich source of interpersonal interaction, and were mentioned by Mead. Seka are numerous and each individual generally belongs to several. Each focuses on one activity.

Seka cover a broad range of activities of daily life, such as planting and harvest and creative activities such as dance, orchestra, and painting. In one village studied in which the houses are far apart the men met daily in social drinking groups to talk, exchange information, and drink palm wine. Women meet and talk at the market and during bathing and clothes washing. They' also talk when harvesting rice and when laboring in groups.

The authors' observations and Suryani's personal experience growing up and living as an adult in several plains villages, and raising a family of her own, attest to the prominence of interpersonal relationships. For example, clubs or groups of young people often remain cohesive and active for decades and even lifetimes. As years pass by and some members move to different localities, the groups meet less frequently but still hang together. Social interaction is strikingly evident at gatherings of extended families which occur, for example, at the death of a member, travel to the mother temple at Besakih, marriage, birthdays, and other rites of passage. Together, much time is spent in relaxed 6hatting, playing with children, joking, and laughing.
