Story
of Bali, Indonesia
With
reference to personality characteristics, it is worthwhile
noting vignettes of two persons well known to Mead and
bateson who are stark contradictions 'to her presentations.
One is Made Kaler, the incredible, energetic, attentive,
skilled, secretary, who had command of five foreign
languages and who, in Mead's words, was 'just about
the nearest thing to perfection that God ever -made'
. It is evident from; Mead's own descriptions and from
the authors' interviews that he was in no way schizoid,
maladjusted, unintelligent, withdrawn, or lacking in
thoughtfulness. He is a native of Bali and as Balinese
in character as any. 'Mother Person is Karba, Mead's
favorite subject personally the subject of the film.
Karba's First Years' and one of eight children. Bateson,
Mead studied intensively. She described him as the gayest,
liveliest, and most responsive of the children, she
observed. His parents were not atypical for people of,
Bayung Gede but she noted aunt Was a high-spirited person.
Today, 50 years later, he lives with his fourth wife
and one of his three grown sons in a, traditional household
about 40 metres from the main road intersection. His
first three wives did not bear children so they parted,
as is customary, childlessness being a serious problem.
A
mass trance disorder in Malaysia, similar to that of
the Balinese schoolchildren, appeared to be a means
for the children to express distressing feelings and
erotic conflicts regarding the schoolmaster which they
could not express directly (Teok and Tan, 1976).
Suryani

cent), depressive disorders (29 per cent), and somatization
