Story of Bali, Indonesia

The Balinese interviewed associated disappointment and anger with ngambul. Alternative expressions of anger or modified type of temper tantrum in adolescents and adults is slamming furniture and going to bed and sleep. The Balinese see sulking as a way of avoiding a situation in which they are angry or disagree with someone. They debate or disagree openly. The Balinese consider ngambul normal behavior' though not common in children and adults. No evidence was 1bund that the causal social factors mentioned above by Mead are relevant

Many of the above behavior patterns observed or confirmed by the authors can be interpreted as serving to preserve the harmony of interpersonal relations and to avoid their disruption because of their paramount importance to the Balinese.

In summary, Bateson and Mead erroneously characterized the Balinese personality as schizoid, as cutoff from interpersonal relationships and emotionally withdrawn. Bateson and Meads data and the authors contradict this. Evidence of strong interpersonal relationships was cited.

Mead was incorrect in characterizing the Balinese as lacking in thoughtfulness and in describing mothers as not cherishing their children. Mead identified a behavior which she called awayness associated with withdrawal, but which the authors interpret as dissociation or a self-hypnotic state. Bateson and Mead described a pattern of the mother teasing her child by borrowing another baby and concluded that this leads to a sulking phase in development and to lifelong- emotional withdrawal. The authors gave a Balinese interpretation to the practice of borrowing babies: it is positive training in learning to control emotions. Mead placed great significance on a pattern of mother-turning- away-from-her child as a determinant of lack of climb in the culture, but the authors were unable to replicate observations of this behavior therefore doubt is cast on the validity of Mead's conclusion that the consequence of the mother' s turning away from her child is a life and culture without climax.
