Story
of Bali, Indonesia
Some
cultural anthropologists in America consider Bateson
and Mead's Balinese Character as basically wrong in
its assumption that there is a common character to most
(or even many) Balinese and that this is systematically
related to the Balinese culture. Some might also consider
this an unprovable notion and hold that similarities
of 'character traits' are illusions, based on external
impressions. They might regard character traits as conventional
ways of behaving which would come under the category,
of culture'. They disagree that people make cultural
directives part of their personal character. Rather,
they believe that people conform to cultural directives.
This same viewpoint would hold that the differences
between Bali and America represent cultural differences,
not matters of character, and would invalidate Bateson
and Mead's conclusions and the conclusions in this chapter
as wet
Nevertheless,
the concept of national character is viable and expounded
by some contemporary cultural anthropologists and sociologists.7
Wallace presented the theoretical viewpoint of anthropologists
who subscribe to the concept of national character or
what he called 'basic personality'. He viewed patterns
of a national character as 'the articulation of a large
number of components into a structure or pattern'. He
defined this pattern as a set of intricate, dynamic
interrelationships among different aspects of a personality
or character' . The term 'basic personality' or 'national
character applied to any culturally bounded group and
'tended to connote a more thoroughgoing use of the psychoanalytic
theory of personality' . However, he disavowed partiality
to any particular theoretical schema. The term, as he
recognized it, did not imply a particular type of social
organization nor a particular theory of personality;
