| What
Indonesia - Bali is all about ?
While
Tjoepak was living in exile in the forest of Wanasaba
a supernatural voice spoke to him and commanded him
to go to the help of the king of that country, whose
kingdom was being plagued by a monstrous bird, Paksi
Garuda, which had to have a human being for its food
ever day. Tjoepak went to the market and heard the women
who sat there selling that the king was in despair because
the bird had demanded his own daughter for its next
meal. So Tjoepak went to the king and promised to kill
the bird if the king would reward him with his daughter
as wife. The king was obliged to promise, for he saw
no other way of escape. Tjoepak had a great hole dug
and climbed down into it, but he surrounded it with
soldiers armed with spears and lances. When the Garuda
bird came flying to the spot it swooped down on Tjoepak,,
and was at once attacked and killed by the soldiers
with their spears. Then Tjoepak cut off its head and
brought it to the king and received the promised reward.
A
great wedding was celebrated and despite his appearance
the princess lived happily with him, and at last became
pregnant. But the people made fun of Tjoepak on account
of his ugliness and at last he told his wife that he
should try to become good-looking by the power of meditation.
She would bear twins, he said, which she must call Djayangrana
and Djayangrani, but she must on no account disturb
him in his meditation. He would return of his own accord
when the time came. So he went away and meditated in
Svarga (heaven). After a longish time Indm heard his
prayer and altered his shape. Tjoepa became a strong
and handsome man and received the name of Mantri Anom.'
Grantang, in Daha, also 6d twins born to him and their
names were Sorengrana and Sorengrani.
One
day they got lost in the forest while they were chasig
golden butterflies, and they were driven by a storm
to take shelter in the garden WBatoejaksa, a kind of
rakshasa. Batoejaksa took pity on them and brought them
up in the palace as his own children.
T'Joepak's children grew up too, and one day they asked
their mother who their father was. She replied that
he was meditating in Svarga and must not be disturbed.
But they insisted on setting out immediately for him.
If they could not find him, they said, they would rather
die. So they set out and came at last to the forest
of Handakwana in which was the palace of Batoejaksa.
They were very hungry and thirsty, so they went to ask
for food and drink. When Batoejaksa heard who they were
he tried to persuade them to stay there and marry his
two lovely daughters.
