| Story
of Bali, Indonesia
The
dead cock and victor
were unceremoniously
picked up
and carried
out of the kalangan
by the owners.
At this
point, the
audience
quietly
and without
noticeable
facial expression
paid off
or collected
bets. In
several
minutes,
they reassembled
in the circle,
resumed
talking,
and waited
for the next
fight to
follow in
5 to 10 minutes.
Other cock-fights observed
in Denpasar were
similar
to that described above. Videotapes of these fights
were studied to verify direct observations.
The mounting
tension of the
men anticipating
the beginning
of the fight sequence
was obvious
to the authors. The overt
expression of
emotion during
betting was spontaneous, intense, and dramatic. However,
the climax of death, clearly appreciated by all, elicited
little or no apparent emotional response. Neither did
the subsequent settling of bets.
It was only by questioning betters that the authors
discovered their inner feelings during the kill and
afterwards. The kill evoked feelings of satisfaction
followed by feelings of good fortune by the winning
betters and bad fortune, remorse, regret, or a sense
of loss by the losing gamblers. The absence of outward
signs of emotion at the kill contrasted with the dramatic
expressions during betting.
The
covert inner feelings could be perceived only by the
betters and the owners (who also showed no outward emotion).
The Balinese
consider
it inappropriate
to show
feelings
in such
situations.
Westerners
might gesticulate
emotionally,
cheer, smile,
or talk
at A comparable
point in
a sporting
event. Ai
this point,
the Balinese
participants
invoked
the philosophy
of karma
or suppressed
overt emotional
expression.
There was
a feeling
of satisfaction
that one's karma was being fulfilled either for good
or for bad; whether in this,
life or the
next. They
tried to avoid
expression of
emotion to prevent
others from
feeling disappointed, upset, or angry. They also believed
that if they were to express it, they would receive
it in the same situation from another person (hukum
karma).
The participants feelings of happiness at winning or
sadness at losing money might resurface hours later
at home, out of the view of outsiders. There. overt
expression is acceptable.
In summary, the cock-fight is an emotionally intense
event with a building up of tension to a point of climax.
At the preliminary stages of the cock-fight emotion
is expressed overtly. Climactic emotional responses
are not evident to the observer but are felt internally
by the participants. Various emotions associated with
winning and losing tend to be suppressed or dealt with
by utilization of the concept of karma, as it is understood
by the individual.
