Story of Bali, Indonesia

No major changes are envisioned in the backbone of Balinese culture, of which a basic characteristic is the maintenance of equilibrium of forces and others factors based on Balinese Hindu religion. However, adaptation to disturbances in cultural equilibrium will continue to take place and some mental disorders, which are forms of adaptation, will continue to be shaped in form and symptomatology by the pervasive determinant subsumed under the Balinese character.

Mead stated that no appeal has ever been made to him ( a Balinese ) to achieve in order to validate his humanity, for that is taken as given. This conclusion about character was not elaborated upon nor supported by data. It merely states the absence of a quality in the Balinese that by implication, is characteristic of Western cultures i.e. the need to achieve. The authors wondered if this reference to achievement could have been generated out of one of Mead's own personal life themes a striking lifestyle of achievement, or possibly her theoretical focus on what is known in anthropology as negative instance a pattern general to many cultures is absent in one culture

This was purportedly the chief strategy used by Mead in presenting the Samoans as lacking adolescent turmoil and crisis and there by supporting the doctrine of cultural determinism. The part of her statement regarding the given aspect of humanity may have been related to the honorific attitude towards and indulgent care of newborns and small children. It is true that Balinese children are provide with much care, attention and physical contact in the early years of the life. For the first 6 months the infant is regarded as holy. Children are believed to be close to the gods and surrounded by them until 3 years of age. Since the souls of the baby are those of their ancestors they have high language and can not punish them . The Balinese interpret a baby's smile as a response to the gods teaching or playing. A special area in the god of the symbols such as the umbilical cord and for offerings to the god of the baby (dewaKumara) and the sibling spirits From birth each Balinese already has a secure place among his closely knit family community ancestors and the gods.
