Story of Bali, Indonesia

Piqued at not receiving the post of minister which had been promised him, Rangga. Lawe retired to his province, where he was joined by several of the young king's most important vassals. An intriguing courtier fomented the quarrel into a serious rebellion, and Rangga Lawe. And all his supporters were killed. We have already mentioned Rangga Lawe as one of the themes of Gamboeh, to the performance of which, however, a certain danger attaches because of some magical quality it possesses. One feels it to be a much more suitable subject for Gamboeh, with its varied ranks of officials, movement, and splendor. But by far the most important of Javanese themes is the story of Ken Arok, a favorite subject of Topeng both in Bali and Java. It is indeed so marvellous a story that we feel impelled to give it at much greater length, and to accompany the story by a short account of its performance.
