Topeng, like Gamboeh, commemorates stories of the court, but of a different, nature; for they are based on history, though generally with a background of the miraculous, no line having ever been drawn in them between what may and what may not happen. A lontar of 1058 mentions a performance of a masked play which may of course have had nothing but the mask to relate it to the Topeng of to-day; for topeng simply means 'something pressed against (the face), i.e. a mask. In the Javanese lontar, Kidoeng Soenda, we also find a Topeng forming part,, with Boris, at the cremation ceremonies of King Ajam Woeroek.
