Story
of Bali, Indonesia
The
highest castle is that of the Brahmanas, from which
the priests were recruited, followed by the Kshatriyas
to which princes and noblemen belonged; inferior to
these was the third group, the Kshatriyas, which embraced
agriculturalists and traders. The fourth group was constituted
by the indigenous population, the Sudras. Completely
out side this system was the parias, or untouchables
- outcasts deprived of all rights.
The
religious character of these castle distinctions is
evident from the religious ceremonies with which the
Indian's caste status was confirmed.
But
these ceremonies took place only in the case of the
first three castes colors; afterwards, as a visible
sign of his social rank, each person wore a sacred thread.
From
the 7th century B.C. up to the beginning of the Christian
era very significant works, the Upanishads, appeared,
written in Sanskrit. They arc among the most important
literary works of mankind. They contain commentaries
on mystical concepts, and reflect the tremendous revolution
in orthodox religion which occurred in tile 7th and
6th centuries B.C.
