. Like so many others, he rejected the ritualism of the pricsts and after much searching and, meditation arrived at the discovery of 'the truth'. Seated tinder a pipal tree (ficus religione), later called the Bodhi tree, he gained illumination (bodhi).

In the course of long wanderings through north-west India, he preached his doctrine, and by, the time of his death in about 480 B.C. had, already a large number of adherents.
