These
patterns can be divided into two main groups:
a) patterns with a horizontal and vertical geometrical
arrangement'
b) patterns with a diagonal geometrical arrangement.
Group (a) can be subdivided according to the geometrical
form of
the motifs employed:
i) Tjeplokkan: the motif is rosettc-shaped (circular,oval,or
square)
ii) Ganggong: the motif is star- or rhomb-shaped
iii) Kawung: the pattern is derived from intersecting
circles, wit the elliptical spaces thus formed being
filled in with certain small motifs;
iv) Tambal: this pattern strongly resembles a crazy
quilt. The motif found are fairly varied;
v) Poleng: the chequered pattern. The unique point about
this pattern is that it is never found on
