Story of Bali, Indonesia

Approximately in tile year 1450 Islam began to penetrate into Java: Islam the vicerous who became Mohammedans made themselves independent, and finally brought about the collapse of Madjapahit. About 1520 this kingdom disappeared completely from history, and soon the end also came of the era in which sea-borne trade formed the basis of the power and authority of the great Javanese kingdoms. Only the small state of Balambangan managed to retain its independence, and defend its Hindu-Javanese culture two and half centuries.

The only territory to have retained its Hindu-Buddhist character u to the present day is Bali, situated to the cast of Java. Its record history does not date bark beyond tile 10th century A.D. It tells the; story of a kingdom in which, just as in Java, the religion was a fusion of Shivaism and Buddhism. Bali developed along lines of its own; the language and script, derived like Javanese from tile Palava script of southern India, are indigenous

It was not until about 1000 that contact with Java became frequent. Airlangga, the son of a Balinese prince, as we have seen, united both kingdoms, but after his death there could be no further question o Java exercising any real authority over this island.
