Story of Bali, Indonesia

On such an occasion, or during an important temple-feast, a Wajang Wong festival may last for a week, different episodes of the story following each other on successive days without regard to their sequence. We may have, as it were, Dos Rheingold interposed after Siegfried or even after Gatterdan merung; in terms of Wajang Wong the episode which led to the rape of Sita and the subsequent mobilization of the monkeys, on the last day of the festival instead of on the first, as epilogue instead of prelude. Ritual requirements are satisfied by the performance of scenes from the Ramayana, from which every episode in Wajang Wong is drawn. Every one knows the story, and no one cares in which order the episodes appear.

The great Indian epics Mahabharata and Ramayana are as familiar to every man, woman and child in Bali as the Bible formerly was to us; familiar through recitation and through their pictorial and dramatic art. As a like familiarity cannot be taken for granted in Europe we will give in very brief outline the main events of the Ramayana which are dramatized in the Wajang Wong. Rama, an incarnation of Vishnu, was supplanted in his succession to the throne, in consequence of an oath taken long before by his father Dasaratha, and with his wife Sita and his brother Lakshmana, went into voluntary exile for fourteen years. .
