Story
of Bali, Indonesia
The
great Indian epics Mahabharata and Ramayana are as familiar
to every man, woman and child in Bali as the Bible formerly
was to us; familiar through recitation and through their
pictorial and dramatic art. As a like familiarity cannot
be taken for granted in Europe we will give in very
brief outline the main events of the Ramayana which
are dramatized in the Wajang Wong. Rama, an incarnation
of Vishnu, was supplanted in his succession to the throne,
in consequence of an oath taken long before by his father
Dasaratha, and with his wife Sita and his brother Lakshmana,
went into voluntary exile for fourteen years. .
articles
of clothing, but only on the garments worn by certain
puppets in the wayang show.
Characteristic
of these latter are fairly broad, parallel diagonal
bands bordered by wavy lines and Alternating with narrower
bands. These small bands mostly have small rhomb-shaped
decorative motifs, but also other geometrical figures
as well. From the wavy border there sprout forth linear
patterns which cover the broad bands and alternate regularly
with the others: next to the ornament which springs
out from the lower wavy line and does not touch the
tipper border, there is always a similar ornament. but

Surpanakha
, demon sister of the rakshasa Ravana, visited their
hermitage in the forest and made love successively to
Rama and Lakshmana, but was rejected by both and had
her nose and ears cut off. To avenge her Ravana sent
the rakshasa Marica in the semblance of a deer, to lure
away the hunter Rama, thus leaving Sita unprotected.
Sita fell into the trap; she was so captivated by the
delicate mottled coat and 'variegated countenance' of
the deer that she implored Rama to go and catch it for
her as a playmate.
