Story
of Bali, Indonesia
He
leaves her in the care of his brother and goes off into
the forest. But Sita becomes anxious at his long absence
and imagines she hears his voice crying for help. Nothing
will satisfy her but Lakshmana must go after him, and
while she remains alone Ravana gets admission to the
house in the disguise of a mendicant and carries her
off to his kingdom of Lanka (Ceylon). The bird Jatayu,
which owed its life to Rama, is mortally wounded in
an attempt to win her back, but survives to deliver
Sita's ring to Rama, and tell him what has happened.
Rama, despairing in the forest, meets the monkey king
Sugriva, who promises the help of all his monkey host
if Rama will destroy his twin brother Subali, who has
taken his wife and kingdom from him. Subali is killed
and the monkeys, led by Hanuman, build a bridge across
the sea to Lanka, and after a long and terrible war
defeat and kill Ravana. Sita, on suspicion of infidelity
during her long captivity, undergoes the ordeal by fire.
She emerges victorious and accompanies Rama to his Kingdom
of Ayodhya, but again the people begin to murmur and
again Rama listens, and banishes her to the Ganges,
where in the hermitage of the sage Valmiki (author of
the Ramayana) she gives birth to two sons.
