Story
of Bali, Indonesia
They
are always slain, whereupon the bearers roll out from
under them and try to escape, but are captured and carried
off by the palace attendants. These strange monster
resuscitate in 'protective coloring of snow white, to
be again laid low. Fortunately Bali has not yet discovered
this refined means of stage illusion.
We are now back in the forest. The rakshasas have withdrawn.
Only Marica enters. From the far end, disguised as Menda,
the deer, masked; and with an informal cluster of short
draperies, a pale coral monkey's tail curling over his
head, finished off with a many-colored bunch of ribbons
(it is mentioned in the Ramayana that the deer Sita
so much desired had a rainbow tail
Two
horns show above his leather mask, which like all those
in Wajang Wong is framed in wide-spreading gilded leather
wings, perforated in splendid patterns. Sita and the
tjondong have risen, and winding forward converse with
the deer, who trots and prances with agile steps and
engaging gestures before Sita, leaping from one kneeling
posture to another. She tells Rama of her desire for
the deer, while it curvets in sly elation over the ground,
somehow in its complete unrealism the very essence of
deer. Rama comes out into the forest with Toealen, leaving
Lakshmana, with Sita in the hut, i.e. beside the gamelan.
