Story
of Bali, Indonesia
Rama
and Lakshmana re-enter solemnly singing, and wind up
the stage, while the bird flaps madly round and round,
beating the earth with its wings. They close round it
as it sinks into a lovely crouching posture, and in
a high wounded voice tells its tale to Rama, while Toealen
interprets. This scene was again without music. The
death of the bird, swaying strangely before its final
passionate, was very moving. It rose and was led off.
The music again grows wild. Rama dances, then stands
long motionless. A host of monkeys troop in in two files
led by Sugriva and Hanuman, the latter recognizable
by his white tail.
Those
batik fabrics characterized by a freer interpretation
form a group of their own. The motifs are always formed
by intertwining leaf or flower motifs, producing a rhythmic
arrangement. These patterns are called semen
In
the semen patterns flowers and leaves are invariably
found, also sometimes in conjunction with animals, the
mirong and/or the sawat ornament. The mirong ornament
consists of a single or double wing motif. whilst the
sawat ornament has a double wing with a bird's tail
spread out like a fan; Perhaps this is reminiscent of
Shiva's eagle,. garuda.
They
address each other with monkey cries, changing restlessly
from knee to knee, moving about continually with queer
fastidious steps. The monkeys, though dressed in the
same medley of short scarlet and check stuffs, the same
gilded leather necklaces, bracelets and belts, and uttering
the same weird cries, are in style quite carefully differentiated,
as well as by their distinctive masks. Sugriva now approaches
with majestic but uneasy gestures, never still, punctuating
his gliding, darting steps with swift accents.
