Story
of Bali, Indonesia
Temoenggoeng,
with slow winding movements of the arm, remains on the
spot or advances in a leisurely way, while Demang, always
doubling on himself with immense rapidity, triples round
him with tiny steps, continually spurred on by the cry:
'Brother Meng, go round, go round. "Brother Meng's
'going-round' is exceedingly comic; he trips swiftly
in circles, one foot shifting continually while the
other, with infinite lightness, merely tips the ground.
They separate with slow, swaying steps, then dance wildly
backwards in a continual accelerando with bodies much
bent forward, till they cannon off each other's back
in the middle of the ground, with loud roars of exuberant
laughter.
They
are so pleased with this manceuvre that they repeat
it forwards with extended arms. If with the entry of
an other patih, later in the play, another Demang and
Temoenggroeng have to appear, there is a greater freedom
in their dance; and they sometimes make tremendous play
with the umbrellas, drawing them down to their level,
playing hide-and-seek round their great disks, peering
over them, dashing them to and fro, and piling up umbrellas
and faces in amusing patterns.
