Story
of Bali, Indonesia
It
is worth noting that the tumpal motif, too, appears
on the borders of some groups of patterns. Here an ancient
symbol has survived.
In
the 17th century painted textiles were imported into
Java from India (Malabar) In such quantities that attempts
were made on economic grounds to stimulate domestic
production of coloured fabrics, with the result that
batik textiles now became a much sought-after export.
Finally, reference may be made to batik work from Cheribon,
on which typical Chinese motifs, clouds and earth symbols,
were to be found. The rolours used, too, differ from
those that are usual. Nuances of colour such as are
found here do not appear on other batik fabrics.
.
Their dance is, of course, not unrelated to the patih,
though it seems to have escaped from subjection to any
control but its own mad caprice. They continually look
for him and allude to him; they call to him and he replies.
But it is not till they have satdown beside the gamelan
that he really advances, with ingratiating voice and
gesture, in very slow winding movements, his knees bent
deeply outwards. The patih is scarcely distinguishable
in dress and gesture from a princely character (Pandji)
whose entry we shall presently describe. He wears the
Pandji headdress with its great downward curving horn,
though with a slight modification, and the same splendid
pradaed kain as all the royal characters. The patih
in Gaimboeh is always 'refined'.
