Story
of Bali, Indonesia
It
is worth noting that the tumpal motif, too, appears
on the borders of some groups of patterns. Here an ancient
symbol has survived.
As
already mentioned, the earliest batik fabrics are one-coloured;
they have a colourless drawing on a dark blue ground.
For this blue ground indigo was used-a light-resisting
colouring-matter obtained from the leaves of various
plants of the get it is indigofera by means of fairly
complex processes.
It
was only later that multi-coloured batik fabrics were
produced. In the 'Principalities' Preference was given
to the colour combination of indigo, soga brown and
white. Soga is obtained from the bast of certain trees.
but this particularly beautiful colour will not adhere
to the fabric without the use of a fixative.
Their
names are Ken Bajan, Ken Sangit, Ken Pasiran, and Ken
Pangoenengan, tides drawn like all the others from the
Javanese romance Pandji. They are dressed like the princess
in tightly wound cloth of gold and flower-laden crowns,
save that she wears a stole and a long train, while
they have a sash hanging over the left shoulder. They
do a long and elaborate dance in very slow movement,
with varied grouping and much sinking and rising, before
the great lady herself enters and drifts up the stage:
with infinitely slow evolutions, her delicate hands
revolving, her arm movements resembling the indefinable
slow cadence of Redjang. Before she sits down among
her ladies at the far end the tjondong rises and does
a dance in front of her, during which a dialogue introduces
the intrigue.
