Story
of Bali, Indonesia
The
final flagrant episode of a Gamboeh that had been crowded
with pomp and pageantry was the actual burning of a
house (which plays an important part in the story),
a real bamboo house, properly roofed, which was built
for the occasion at the entrance to the dance-ground.
The defeated army, in revenge, fired it as they retired
and it flared up into the night among the great cries
of Gamboeh and the excitement of the real crowd.
We have tried to give some general idea of the scope
and scene of Gamboeh; of its general action but not
of the development of the story, which is so involved
in choreographic ritual that it is almost impossible
to unravel. Let us be content to look at it as an excuse
for the dance
It
is worth noting that the tumpal motif, too, appears
on the borders of some groups of patterns. Here an ancient
symbol has survived.
In
districts outside the 'Principalities' yellow and red
were also used. The art of dyeing cloth red was introduced
to Java by Indian Muslims from the i8th century onwards;
it required particular care because the colouiring-matter
had to be rubbed into the fabric. The red dye is thus
applied before the blue. Those who do not know Java
at first hand can hardly visualize the matchless hardly
- a veritable visual fea5t - exhibited at the kratons
of central Java, especially at festivals. The batik
articles if clothing worn on such occasions witness
to a truly article sense of beauty and a unique textile
design.
