The final flagrant episode of a Gamboeh that had been crowded with pomp and pageantry was the actual burning of a house (which plays an important part in the story), a real bamboo house, properly roofed, which was built for the occasion at the entrance to the dance-ground. The defeated army, in revenge, fired it as they retired and it flared up into the night among the great cries of Gamboeh and the excitement of the real crowd.
