Story
of Bali, Indonesia
Grantang
did not complain, he only wept and ran away. Then Tjoepak,
who had no intention of working in the fields alone,
said to his mother: 'Why did you drive away my brother?
Give me food and I will go after him; I cannot let him
die. So he caught him up and they went along together
till they came to Daha, at the very moment when the
king had called together all the dignitaries of his
kingdom to consult about the rescue of his daughter,
Moestikan Ing Daha, who had been stolen away by the
ogre, Detya Menaroeng. The king swore that whoever killed
the ogre and rescued his daughter should marry her and
become heir to the throne.
Tjoepak
at once vowed that he would kill the ogre, boasting
that ogres were to him no more than flying ants which
he crushed between his fingers. It was in vain that
Grantang tried to hold him back; he had to go too, and
after a great feast they set forth, laden with food
for the journey. Of course the load was put on Grantang's
shoulders, and all the people laughed and said: 'How
odd that it is the good-looking one who has the load
to carry!' Then Tjoepak insisted on taking it, hoping
to be praised too. But they only laughed the louder.
Whereupon he became very angry, and gave it back to
Grantang. They walked and walked till they came to the
forest of Mengoeli, and sat down to rest under a banyan-tree.
And
Tjoepak said: 'We must have some water to drink with
our food, but if I leave you here alone you will never
be able to defend the food from thieves; so you had
better go and fetch it. And so that Grantang might stay
away a long time he gave him a leaky water-pot, then
settled down to eat up all the food himself, and afterwards
tore the basket to pieces so that it might look as if
dogs had stolen the food. Then he lay down and went
to sleep. It took Grantang a long time to mend his leaky
pot and fill it with water, and when he got back Tjoepak
woke with a great start and told his story about the
dogs.
