Story of Bali, Indonesia

He tried to persuade Grantang to return to the palace and fetch more food, but Grantang insisted on going forward. All the traces of the monster which they met on the way filled Tjoepak with terror; again and again he wanted to go back. But at last they came to the ogre's palace, set in a lovely valley and enclosed by high walls. And they heard the princess weeping and the ogre consoling her with the softest words he knew. They climbed a great tamarind-tree and looked down into the garden, and Tjoepak trembling with fright said to Grantang: 'I had better challenge him from up here while you go down and fight, for your voice is so weak that he will never hear it. But tie me fast before you go.' So Grantang climbed down and put the ogre to sleep with a spell; and the princess fell at his feet, for he was so beautiful that she thought he was a god. And when Tjoepak heard her promise to marry.

Grantang if he would save her, he shouted furiously from the tree: 'Bring her up here. I am the elder and she belongs to me by right.' And Grantang did so. The princess told ' him that the ogre could only be killed if he were wounded in the mouth, so he shot an arrow into the mouth of the monster, who had woken up and was shouting up into the tree, and killed him. Then Tjoepak ventured down and struck him again with the arrow and said, 'Now he is really dead, and it was I who killed him.' On the way back they lay down to sleep in the forest when night fell, and Tjoepak promised to keep watch. While they slept Ni Boetawili;, the ogre's sister, stole the princess away, for Tjoepak was so frightened that he pretended to be asleep.

It is worth noting that the tumpal motif, too, appears on the borders of some groups of patterns. Here an ancient symbol has survived.

Many articles of clothing were also produced by the batik method: it addition to tile traditional head-cloth, the dye is applied subsequently. This process, known as plangi, produces carrying things in, slendang, and tile breast-covering worn by women, kemben, mention should be made of the festive garment worn by men, dodot, and by women, sampur, each four to five yards long and of magnificent design.

The old batik fabrics testify to a centuries-old civilization, ill which the dignity of the prince depended on ostentation and beauty, and the sacred ancient patterns suggested, more than anything else, the social position of the wearer.
