Story
of Bali, Indonesia
When
the ladies have sat down at the far end beside the gamelan
there is a comic interlude, before the entry of the
king, by the traditional court attendants, in Tjoepak
called Panas-hati and Soekadaya, who both wear kains
of large black and white check over striped red, white,
and black trousers. There is the usual scene of court
clowning, parodies of royal pomp and topical improvisations;
the usual mockery of the chief attendant by the clown,
who holds the ceremonial umbrella all wrong, either
covering Panas-hati's face completely or forgetting
to walk with him, so that he struts forward in imagined
state while the symbol of his dignity remains behind.
The
great gold and black umbrellas held thus at slanting
angles made a grand patterned decor. Panas-hati's discovery
that he had crouched too soon in anticipation of the
raja's entry, and his forward dance with crouching duck-steps
in his long robe was a marvel of acrobacy as well as
a brilliant translation of courtly subservience and
pomposity into terms of dance.
With the entry of the stately figure of the King of
Daha we return to the high style. Leaning forward with
grand gestures beside the umbrellas he converses with
Panas-hati in flowery language, which it is the vizir's
role to translate Balinese, shifting while he speaks
from one noble pose to another
