Story
of Bali, Indonesia
Ibis
indescribably funny scene, with its succession of terrors,
toadying, pouncing, recoveries, self-pitying, and self-congratulations,
was prolonged for the delight of the audience. The two
servants sent out to order food for Tjoepak were called
back again and again as some fresh delicacy occurred
to him, and were each time in danger of annihilation
for their stupidity. While the fetching of the food
was going on and it was being carried in, Tjoepak joined
the group of actors sitting by the gamelan and partook
of a little off-stage refreshment from a coconut. The
arrangement of the food proceeded 'with a great deal
of fussing and elaboration, all the pots and dishes
making several excursions round the stage on the heads
of Panas-hati and Soekadaya before they had them set
to their satisfaction. Quite a lot of food, too, found
its way into their mouths, so that when Tjoepak moved
majestically towards his stage repast they dodged round,
trying to postpone the uncovering of die dishes.
It
is worth noting that the tumpal motif, too, appears
on the borders of some groups of patterns. Here an ancient
symbol has survived.
Batik
became a real national craft. Though hound by tradition,
it nevertheless offered ample opportunities for personal
interpretation and individual expression.
But
there is yet another way of designing textiles in Java
and other districts of Indonesia. First of all certain
motifs are drawn or stamped, each individually, on to
the fabric, which is usually silk. Then the figures
are sketched in outline by means of tacking thread.
When the threads are pulled tight, small loops appear
which are then bound round with plant fibre.
