Story
of Bali, Indonesia
Tjoepak
shouts still louder to the princess to watch his triumph,
while Grantang droops over his spear watching the arrogant
parade. Mere is a sudden change. With a great noise
of drums and cymbals Grantang leaps in the air, and
in a brief and brilliant fight Tjoepak is defeated and
driven off the stage. This may be the end, or a love
dance may follow between Grantang and the princess.
But the choice of ending does not. Always depend upon
the actors. In the performance here described a love-dance
was intended, but the audience rose to a man at the
flight of Tjoepak, and there was nothing for it but
to assume with them that the play was over.
The
perfect medium for Tjoepak, as for Tjalonarang, is Wajang
Koelit. Only there is it possible to render all the
surprising episodes; and with entire illusion because
of its entire unreality. The arrival of Grantang in
the market of Daha, shriveled almost to a skeleton and
hardly able to crawl, with a voice like a thin reed,
is intensely moving as well as amusing. In the shadow-play
Grantang is able to have a series of bodies corresponding
to his physical condition at the moment. He is an emaciated
skeleton when first he emerges from the forest; a fishbone
hung with seaweed when he is rescued from the sea; a
round baby-boy in a frilled frock after he has been
fattened by the fisherman; and finally the beautiful
hero, with curving head-dress and all the equipment
of a shadow-play prince.
