Story
of Bali, Indonesia
It
is worth noting that the tumpal motif, too, appears
on the borders of some groups of patterns. Here an ancient
symbol has survived.
When
the fabric is dipped into the dye-vat, the parts protected
in this way do not take up tile dye. Many colours can
be applied on one and the same fabric; and nowadays
an aniline dye is applied subsequently. This process.
known as plangi produces especially attractive results,
with a broad range of colour shades.
As
has already been mentioned, in many parts of Indonesia
the armourer's craft was far developed. The weapons
were frequently more than mere implements, but had a
deeper significance, a definite function of an almost
religious nature. Particular attention was paid to the
manufacture of the hilt and scabbard as well as the
blade, and such weapons were often fine works of art.
The king as well as his attendants was chased by a tiger
with a lion's tail, and climbed posts and platforms
to a place of safety; a grotesque monkey leyak gave
a queer dark blue monkey child into the king's keeping,
and the monkey child was baked over a fire and devoured
with great relish by the king and his attendants. The
monkey parent returned and there was much hypocritical
weeping on the part of the three cannibals, while they
furtively wiped from their lips the traces of the meal.
Then all marched out, led by the monkey parent, who
was magnificently masked. Ile two royal creatures who
entered first, princess and king, played no part whatever
in the story, nor did they seem to bear the remotest
relation to each other.
