Story
of Bali, Indonesia
Hermitagess
have also disappeared, since the building materials
used were impermanent. But as some hermits lived in
caves and grottoes and covered their walls with relief's,
we can draw conclusions regarding their spiritual life.
In Java there are two such grottoes, both in tile cast
of the country. In one of them, near the village of
Tulung Agung, scenes from Ardjuria's life, Ardjunavivaha,
are to be found. There is a kala head over the entrance
to this grotto similar to those found over tile doors
in the tjandis.
On
Bali, where Hinduism survived, there are many bathing-places
Bathing- places to be found. Since this island was strongly
influenced by the Hindu Javanese culture of the eastern
Javanese period, it can be concluded that many such
bathing-places existed in Java too surmise which is
confirmed by the few, but nevertheless instructive,
ruins that still exist. These baths are above all significant
in that they were erect at the burial of a prince.
Thus
on the northern slope of Mount Penanggungan we find
a sepulchral bathing-place, in which the ashes of King
Airlangga were interred beneath the actual basin. In
two adjacent recesses there stand next to one another
figures of Shri and Lakshmi, the two incarnations of
Vishnu's shakti. A statue of the king himself originally
stood above.the two female figures, Behind the tjandi
of Panataran in eastern Java there is a bathing-place
with relief's, connected with the tantri tales, Indian
fables in the form of kidungs.
The world jandis means sepulchral monument. For long
time this popular name was considered inappropriate.
But subsequent , research has shown that the majority
of buildings are more actuality designated in this way
than by word temple.
Originally the role of Indian culture was probably some
what exaggerated, and from certain stylistic resemblances
is was concluded that these monuments served the same
purpose as those in India, with its more ancient culture.
