An intriguing courtier fomented the quarrel into a serious rebellion, and Rangga Lawe. And all his supporters were killed. We have already mentioned Rangga Lawe as one of the themes of Gamboeh, to the performance of which, however, a certain danger attaches because of some magical quality it possesses. One feels it to be a much more suitable subject for Gamboeh, with its varied ranks of officials, movement, and splendor. But by far the most important of Javanese themes is the story of Ken Arok, a favorite subject of Topeng both in Bali and Java. It is indeed so marvellous a story that we feel impelled to give it at much greater length, and to accompany the story by a short account of its performance.
