This
island, too, became almost completely Christianized,
but the art of the natives was spared. In the districts
of Ende and Lio very harmonious diatonic harvest songs
are popular. The singing of the people of Manggarai
resembles yodelling, whilst in other districts even
three- and four-part singing is known. A rather remarkable
relic of Western influence upon eastern Flores exists
in the shape of folk-songs originating from 17th-century
north-western Europe, which have survived in a form
almost unmodified by time. The Portuguese and Ambonese,
too, have also left traces of their presence here
As
far as musical instrument are concerned, Flores possesses
indirectly blown bass flutes, which are only to be found
on this island, and also) bamboo zithers, bamboo slit-drums,
small gongs, pan-pipes very primitive one-stringed lutes
played with the bow, and a very simply constructed xylophone.
Much
of the music played by the inhabitants of tile central
districs of Timor corresponds to that oil Flores, although
it lacks the s.1me rich variety of form. The inhabitants
of tile coastal districts, on the other hand, were exposed
to various foreign influences, and have thus lost much
of their individuality. From the neighboring island
of Roti they have adopted a particularly five instrument,
a bamboo zither, sesundo, with between tell and thirty-six
strings of copper wire and a hemispherical resonator
made of leaves of tile nipah palm.
