BALINESE HINDUISM

    Posted : 2008-11-30
Almost 93 % of Balinese people are Hindus. A small percentage of Hindus are also found in East java, Sumatra, Kalimantan, and Lombok. The Balinese Hinduism, or we can call it as Hindu Dharma, is different than Hinduism in India. The tradition and goddess concept are different as well. The Balinese Hinduism is closely related with ritual and art activities. In Balinese Hinduism, almost every occasion in life is expressed and appreciated trough the ritual ceremonies. Whether it’s for commemorating puberty, marriage, cremation, or even death, everything is expressed in the form of religious ceremonies. As a matter of fact, the ceremonies have become the crucial parts of Balinese daily lives, creating such unique view for all Bali vacation followers.

If you really get pleasure from your travel in Bali, then you will recognize a prominent personage for Balinese Hinduism is a priest. Balinese priest is a religious leader that can be found almost in each village or Banjar (the local community). When a family celebrates the ceremonies, then a priest will be invited to bring the holy water. A priest can also be asked whenever the local people need religious advises. Therefore, the ceremonies and the priests cannot be separated one to another. Some priests are even believed to be able to cure certain illnesses that may be suffered by the Balinese people. Amongst the society, the priest is respected more than the ordinary people.

The Balinese Hinduism is also manifested through the creations and existences of the Balinese temples. Along your journey or Bali tour on this island, you will see that the temples play important role in such prominent ceremonies or the other worship activities. Every regency, village, Banjar, and single house must have their own temples. Praying in the temple is done by the Balinese people in their houses. The existence of those temples is associated with Banjar, the rice fields, or with the geographic sites. Beside as worship place, a village temple can also be utilized to perform special recital of dance-drama.

The goddess concept belongs to Balinese Hinduism is the Hindu trinity representing Brahma, Shiva, and Vishnu, as symptoms of the supreme God, Ida Sanghyang Widhi. More than that, Balinese people trust the magic and the power of spirits. Everyday, Balinese people prepare small offerings for God; we can call them Canang Sari. When it comes to big ceremonies or festivals, the Balinese women will bear the wonderfully-formed pyramids of fruits, foods, and flowers. Additionally, the cockfight also becomes a prominent occasion in Balinese society which is specially conducted by Balinese men. All of those activities surely add value to the entire magnificence of this island, pleasing the aims the vacation goers come to Bali for.
